Senior V.P. Crisis Communications Specialist
As the head of Leer’s Crisis Communications practice, Andy Skoogman brings a wealth of experience and expertise in handling high profile issues for a wide variety of public and private sector clients. Andy’s proven media relations and crisis communications strategies help minimize and eliminate damage to a client’s reputations from negative publicity.
A former Emmy Award winning broadcast journalist, Andy’s focus in recent years has been in the public health and public safety arenas.
He’s the lead communications strategist and trainer for U.S. Army North, the first federal forces deployed in the event of a natural or man-made disaster in the U.S. In that role, Andy works with two and three star Army generals and other high-ranking officers on crisis communications strategies and media relations techniques. He also led the media training efforts for the Department of Defense’s first Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear unit created for deployment within U.S. borders. Andy has also trained dozens of U.S. Army officers prior to their deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo.
In addition, Andy has helped Leer Communications successfully mitigate negative news coverage for police departments, politicians, hospital systems and casinos. He helps clients with all aspects of internal and external crisis communications, including developing key talking points, coordinating news conferences/events, writing news releases and speeches, preparing clients for real-world media interviews and facilitating debriefings following the coverage.
Andy also creates custom-designed curriculum for all of Leer’s media training and presentation skills workshops. He’s trained doctors who have appeared on the CBS Evening News and coached a 10-person corporate presentation team win a $500 million contract with the U.S. Census Bureau. Whether it’s in front of a TV camera or a live audience, Andy helps Leer’s clients communicate more effectively. Andy holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota. He lives in St. Paul, Minn. with his wife, Allanna, and their daughter Josie. |
